Pour sa huitième édition, le concours biennal initié par Luc Ferrari avec le soutien de la Sacem s’inspire d’une des pièces de son catalogue, Madame de Shangaï pour trio de flûtes et bande magnétique.
C’est à la fois une manière de lui rendre hommage et un moyen de stimuler l’imaginaire des créateurs en leur proposant d’écrire une oeuvre qui fait légèrement évoluer le principe du Hörspiel.
En effet, les projets devront s’apparenter à de la musique mixte mais sans interaction autre que la synchronisation d’un l’instrument avec un support stéréophonique ou 5.1. L’écriture instrumentale pourra faire appel à l’amplification et aux transformations excepté le temps réel. La pièce finale, d’un format de 15 minutes maximum, sera interprétée en concert.
Les œuvres des lauréats et la pièce de Luc Ferrari figureront sur un disque ainsi que dans les concerts associés au concours.
Cette tradition de l’hommage sera, nous le souhaitons, stimulante et susceptible de faire naître de nouveaux talents qui ne sauraient être des épigones.
The 8th biennial competition created by Luc Ferrari with the support of Sacem is inspired by a piece from his work, Madame de Shanguai for a flute trio and pre-recorded track.
Both a way of paying tribute to Mr. Ferrari as well as a means of stimulating the imagination of composers, the current competition asks participants to write a piece that develops the principal of the Horspiel.
The entries should resemble mixed music but without any interaction other than the synchronization of an instrument with stereophonic or 5.1 support. The instrumental score will be able to be amplified and transformed except for computerized real time processing. The final piece, with a maximum duration of 15 minutes, will be performed in concert.
The winning entries as well as the piece written by Luc Ferrari will be featured on disc as well as in concerts associated with the competition.
We hope that this tradition of honoring Mr. Ferrari will be stimulating and likely to give rise to new talents and not just epigones.

Article 1 – Pour sa 8e édition, le « concours Luc Ferrari » est consacré à la composition d'un hörspiel pour instrument soliste et sons fixés. Il est organisé par La Muse en Circuit, Centre National de Création Musicale, en partenariat avec la SACEM, le Festival Archipel, Radio France, la Radio Suisse Romande - Espace 2 et la WDR.
Article 2 - Le « concours Luc Ferrari » est ouvert aux compositeurs de moins de 35 ans de toutes nationalités. Il permet, sur décision d'un jury, de retenir trois projets de création et d'offrir à chacun des trois lauréats la possibilité de réaliser sur une durée de deux semaines une œuvre de quinze minutes maximum dans les studios de la Muse en Circuit. Les trois œuvres seront éditées sur disque compact (sortie prévue en mars 2009) et distribuées auprès des radios françaises et étrangères. Elles seront interprétées en concert dans le cadre du festival Archipel de Genève (avril 2009) et à Paris, dans le cadre de la programmation musicale de la Muse en Circuit (mai 2009). La présence des compositeurs est nécessaire lors de ces deux représentations. Les pièces pourront éventuellement être reprises dans d’autres festivals illustrant l'art radiophonique .
Article 3 - Pour postuler au « concours Luc Ferrari », les candidats devront présenter un dossier détaillé décrivant leur projet. Ce projet fera appel à un instrument soliste (à choisir dans la liste ci-dessous) et à des sons fixés de type radiophonique sous forme stéréophonique ou 5.1 (le mixage 5.1 devra être réduit en stéréo pour l’édition sur CD). L’instrument pourra éventuellement être sonorisé, mais ne devra en aucun cas utiliser des traitements informatiques de transformation en temps réel.
Article 4 - Une bourse de résidence de 1 600 euros sera attribuée aux trois lauréats, après décision du jury. Ces derniers auront à disposition, pendant deux semaines, un studio en ordre de marche, une unité mobile de reportage et l'assistance d'un technicien pour la prise de son et la prise en main des studios. Cette résidence comprendra 2 jours de rencontre avec l’instrumentiste et une journée d’enregistrement de la pièce en vue de l’édition du CD. Les voyages et l'hébergement seront pris en charge par le concours. Afin de préparer leur travail, les candidats recevront une fiche technique du matériel dont ils pourront disposer. Les résidences des lauréats seront planifiées entre le 1er novembre 2008 et le 31 janvier 2009.
Article 5 - Le candidat doit envoyer à la Muse en Circuit avant le 15 septembre 2008, les pièces suivantes :
o Le bulletin d'inscription au concours
o Un curriculum vitae
o Un dossier détaillé décrivant le projet que le candidat souhaite réaliser
o Une ou plusieurs réalisations antérieures, qu'elles relèvent ou non d'une écriture radiophonique (au format CD), accompagnées d'un bref descriptif et des éventuelles partitions.
Ces éléments ne seront pas retournés aux candidats quelque soit la décision du jury.
Article 6 - Le jury est composé de personnalités du monde de la musique (compositeurs, chefs d'orchestre, producteurs, journalistes...). Le jury fera connaître la liste des trois lauréats du concours par courrier aux alentours du 15 octobre. Les décisions prises par le jury seront sans appel. Le jury se réserve le droit de retenir un nombre inférieur de lauréats qu'initialement prévu.
Article 7 - La demande de participation et la présentation des projets pour ce concours comprend l'acceptation de la part du candidat de toutes les conditions prévues dans le présent règlement. En cas de contestation, la version en langue française fait autorité. Pour tout litige, seul le Tribunal de Créteil à compétence.

The 8th anniversary of the Luc Ferrari Competition is dedicated to the composition of a Hörspiel for a solo instrument and pre-recorded sounds. It is organized by La Muse en Circuit, Centre National de Création Musicale, in partnership with the SACEM, the Archipel Festival, Radio France, Radio Suisse Romande - Espace 2 and the WDR.
Article 2.
The Luc Ferrari Competition is open to composers of all nationalities under 35 years old. Selected by jury, three winning candidates will be given the opportunity to create one music piece limited to 15 minutes at the Muse en Circuit recording studios for two weeks. The three chosen pieces will be recorded on compact disc (anticipated release March 2009) and distributed to radio stations in France as well as abroad. The works will be performed in concert at the Archipel festival in Geneva (April 2009) and in Paris as part of la Muse en Circuit’s musical programming (May 2009). It will be necessary for the winning composers to attend both of these performances. The pieces may be possibly repeated in other festivals that celebrate radiophonic art.
Article 3.
In order to enter the Luc Ferrari Competition, the candidates must provide a detailed application describing their project. This project will call for a solo instrument (only a monophonic instrument of the symphonic orchestra) and for pre-recorded sounds of radiophonic type in stereophonic or 5.1 format (sound mixing in 5.1 format must be reduced to stereo format on the competition CD). The instrument may be amplified and transformed, but computerized real time processing is strictly prohibited.
Article 4.
A residence award of 1,600 euros will be bestowed to the three winners after the jury’s decision. The winners will have at their disposition a working studio, a mobile recording unit, and assistance from a technician for the recording of the work and operation of the studios. The residence will consist of a 2-day meeting with the instrumentalist as well as of an additional day for recording the piece for the CD. Travel and lodging will be paid for by the competition. Candidates will receive a technical data sheet of material that will be at their disposition in order to prepare their work. The winning residencies will be scheduled between 1 November 2008 and 31 January 2009.
Article 5.
The candidate must send the following items to la Muse en Circuit by 15 September 2008:
o A completed competition registration application
o A curriculum vitae
o A written description of the piece the candidate intends to create
o One or more former works (in CD format), even if they are not especially tailored for radio broadcasting, along with a brief description and written score, if possible.
These items will not be returned to candidates, no matter the decision of the jury.
Article 6.
The jury is made up of influential figures in the world of music, such as composers, conductors, producers, and journalists. The jury will announce the three competition winners by mail around 15 October. All decisions made by the jury shall be final. The jury also reserves the right to select fewer winners than originally planned.
Article 7.
The application to take part in and to present works for the Competition implies full acceptance by the candidate of all of the present competition regulations. In the event of a dispute, only the French language version of the competition rules will be held legally binding and the Créteil Court will have sole jurisdiction.
